The Wireless Standards War Continues: Is IEEE 802.11a Free in the UK? – Macitynet.it
An initiative of this type in fact under examination by the Government which is evaluating the possibility of implementing a complete deregulation of the 5 Ghz band, that of IEEE 302.11a.
At the moment, among the difficulties facing the diffusion of the new implementation, in addition to those determined by the compatibility with the pervasive IEEE 802.11b standard, there is also that of the legislative authorization that could thus fall, at least in England which could then be imitated by others countries.
It is good to note that this will not mean the immediate spread of IEEE 802.11a; many access providers point out that the 11 Mbps bandwidth provided by the IEEE 802.11b hotspots for now is more than enough, especially when aimed at distributing Internet access and few plan to change the much more expensive equipment in perspective to isolate customers who use IEEE 802.11b, not compatible with version 11a.
