In Japan the iPhone effect for Softbank drops
For 16 consecutive months the Japanese mobile operator Softbank, the third largest in the country, has recorded a net increase in users that is greater than all competitors, in particular surpassing the most important NTT DoCoMo and the second in the KDDI Corp. ranking.
The monthly net increase of operators obtained starting from the total number of new subscribers from which the number of customers who abandon to subtract from another operator is subtracted. Softbank spokesmen, quoted by Reuters, announced that in July the net increase was 215,400 users, while in August the number stabilized on 163,300 customers.
Softbank's record result for the month of July mainly due to the iPhone 3G effect: the smartphone has allowed Softbank to attract numerous new customers by "stealing" them from the competition. The downsizing of the results for the month of August indicates that the iPhone effect is gradually fading for Softbank, bringing the net monthly increase in new customers to the pre-iPhone values of the months before July.
