iTunes Music Store: countdown and competition for 500,000,000 songs

The countdown for half a billion songs starts on the Apple website. From a few hours an image representing the search field of iTunes on the site of Apple USA runs the numbers towards the historic finish line.

During the countdown, Apple also promotes a contest that will give an iPod mini and a free iTunes certificate for 50 songs to the iTunes user who buys the winning song at every 100,000 song interval.

The person who downloads the 500 millionth song will win an exceptional prize: 10 iPods to choose from to share with family and friends, and a free certificate to download 10,000 songs and a four-person all-expenses paid trip to see Coldplay on their tour world.

The competition is valid for all residents in the various countries where there is an iTunes store, including Italy, even if a page with the regulation for our country has not yet been set up.

As reported today, Apple announced the availability of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Live) and The Long and Winding Road (Live) on the iTunes Music Store. Both songs were recorded live last weekend during the Live 8 concerts sung by U2 and Sir Paul McCartney. The news that the proceeds from the sale of these unique performances will be in favor of debt relief in Africa.

"As we approach the milestone of half a billion songs sold, we want to thank our customers, artists and music labels who have helped us make iTunes the global success that it has become," said Eddy Cue, vice president Apple applications. "ITunes continues to be the first online music store in the world, featuring the best digital music in the world, including special concerts like the Live 8."
