Install OS X El Capitan 10.11 from chievatta USB

On September 30, Apple publicly released the final version of OS X El Capitan 10.11. If you want to install the latest version of the operating system you can do it for free by downloading it from the Mac App Store and running the automatic update. Following this procedure you will proceed to install OS X El Capitan 10updating the old operating system without missing out and apps on the Mac.

If you prefer to make a clean installation of OS X El Capitan 10.11, thus avoiding delays and problems of any kind, there is a method that involves installing El Capitan from USB with a capacity of at least 8GB.

This method can be useful even if you need to update more than one Mac, thus avoiding having to download OS X El Capitan on each one and relying on a single download and your USB key. If you read later you will find the guide on how to install OS X El Capitan 10.11 from USB key.

El Capitan 10.11 clean installation via USB key

If you want to proceed to create a USB stick useful for a clean installation of El Capitan 10.11, here is everything you need:

  • A Mac (in my case you will be using a Mac with OS X Yosemite installed).
  • A USB stick of at least 8GB. To speed up the process, if you have a Mac that supports the USB 3.0 standard, get a USB 3.0 key. In any case, any USB stick is fine.
  • You must have downloaded OS X El Capitan from the Mac App Store (available from 7 pm on September 30th). At the end of the download, you'll find yourself with the OS X El Capitan installer icon in the Applications folder. Do not start the installation.
  • You also need the free program Diskmaker X, downloadable from here, to be able to create your USB stick with the OS X El Capitan installer.

Guide to install OS X El Capitan 10.11

  • After getting all the necessary equipment, connect the USB stick to the Mac and start Diskmaker X.

CAUTION: all data on the USB stick will be deleted. Make sure you have them stored before proceeding.

  • If you receive an error message that does not allow you to start Diskmaker X, follow this guide to solve the problem and proceed.

The moment I am writing the guide to install OS X El Capitan 10.11, the app Diskmaker X does not officially support OS X El Capitan, but you will have no trouble using it with Apple's latest operating system.

  • Select OS X 10.10 in Diskmaker X and the app will take care of automatically searching for the copy of OS X El Capitan that you previously downloaded from the Mac App Store.

install OS X El Capitan 10.11-2

  • Since Diskmaker X will look for a copy of OS X Yosemite, you will have to select Select an install file and then search El Capitan installer in the Applications folder. When Diskmaker X will update itself to support OS X El Capitan, the search will take place automatically.

Install OS X El Capitan-3

  • After selecting the correct installer, you will be asked where to copy the necessary files to the installation. Select An 8 GB USB thumb drive.

Install OS X El Capitan-1

  • Select your USB stick from the list that appears, confirm it and wait for the operation to complete, which could take up to 20 minutes (a lot depends on the speed of your USB flash drive's transfer).

After creating the USB key you can proceed with the formatting necessary to install OS X El Capitan 10.11.

  • Turn off your Mac and insert the USB stick with OS X El Capitan.
  • Start up your Mac by holding down the key halt until the start-up disk of your Mac and the USB stick just created appear on the screen.
  • Select the USB stick with OS X El Capitan and wait for it to load.
  • After completing the loading of the interface, from the menu bar select Disk Utilityand then click continue.
  • Select the boot disk (in my case it's called Macintosh HD. If you haven't changed it, yours has the same name).
  • Select the tab Initialize and how you choose format Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Under the heading name write Macintosh HD.

CAUTION: all data will be deleted from your Mac. Make sure you have made a backup copy.

  • After filling the garments correctly, select Initialize.
  • At the end of formatting, close Disk Utility and follow the instructions on the screen to start the installation, selecting the partition Macontosh HD when requested as a destination disk.

At the end of the installation you will find yourself with OS X El Capitan 10.11 installed on your Mac.
