How to transfer your iTunes library to a new Mac

The negative and more stressful aspect when buying a new computer is that of having everything installed from scratch and this also takes a long time. Take for example the migration of the library of iTunes on the new computer. In this article we will focus on that main one. For the purposes of this tutorial, we assume you have a brand new computer with no music file on it.

Transfer the iTunes library to a new computer

On the old computer:Step 1: Open a new Finder window and go to the folder Music, which should be below username> Music.

Step 2: You should see a folder named iTunes. Right-click on this folder and copy it.

Step 3: In a new Finder window, connect and open an external hard disk drive or USB key ring.

Step4: Paste the iTunes folder into the external drive or USB stick. Depending on the amount of music you have in your library it may take a while.

On the new computer:We're just going to do the exact opposite of what we've just done.

Step 1: Connect the external hard drive or USB stick to the new computer.

Step2: Double-click on it to open and see what's inside. If the previous steps were completed correctly, you should obviously see the iTunes folder.

Step3:Open a new Finder window and find the Music folder on your new computer.

Step4: From the external disk or USB stick, drag the iTunes folder into the folder Music of the new computer. The files will be copied into the new folder and again may take a while depending on the size of your iTunes library.

Done! Now you can start iTunes on your new computer and all your music, including all the songs, albums, album covers, and playlists will be there.

Please note that if you have also migrated songs that have been purchased suiTunes, you will have to authorize the new computer to listen to these songs. To do this, go up Store> Authorize this computer in iTunes and enter your username and password for iTunes.
