Fortnite far from the end: Epic Games has not pressed the brake pedal of its Battle Royale par excellence at all, and indeed has already announced that Fortnite will be a launch title on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, therefore available by the end of the year, when new generation consoles go on sale. Obviously, at least at the beginning, the title will not benefit from the power of Unreal Engine 5, which will only be available from mid 2021.
Given that all current Fortnite players can play against each other, regardless of which platform they are on, it seems likely that the versions for Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X will also have cross-platform functionality.
In fact, Epic has doubled its cross-play vision by releasing the Epic Online Services toolkit, which allows developers of PC, Mac and console titles to enable cross-platform experiences across all game engines, stores and account services. Support for Android and iOS coming soon. The company announced the free software development kit in late 2018.
The cross-platform game with online games from any device was a key factor in Fortnite's success. Epic announced last week that the title now has over 350 million registered players, and who knows how many will add up with the advent of the next generation of consoles.
